Week 23 - Mevagissey, Cornwall

Mevagissey is a pretty little village with extremely narrow roads and winding alleys full of charming local shops selling great local produce like Cornish pasties, fudge etc.

It is a fishing port with a busy working harbour that is very much open to the public.

Mevagissey has a little museum on the east harbour wall run by volunteers inside which you will find lots of local history. And also along the harbour there is an aquarium.

There are several lovely restaurants, eateries and pubs overlooking the harbour and in the summer this coast has a very Mediterranean look and feel.

With this year being the year of the “Staycation” Mevagissey and the south-east coast of Cornwall is a splendid option.

Week 24 - Pretty in Pink

These are challenging and stressful times for a lot of people and for those who have had to cancel and rearrange their wedding – multiple times in some cases!! – the disappointment and financial losses add another level of difficulty to the life we are all experiencing at the moment.

This week I have created a panel from a wedding I photographed recently.

Tim and Sarah were due to celebrate their marriage with a large celebration in April 2020 – early on in the lockdown – so that had to be cancelled.

Despite the restriction on the number of guests allowed limiting the size of the wedding they attempted to fix a date twice more in 2020. But both times they had to cancel the arrangements.

So finally at the end of May 2021, in front of a handful of family and friends they managed a small but beautiful wedding ceremony and celebration. Sarah wore a gorgeous pink floaty dress and co-ordinated everything within the colour theme. So it truly was a “pretty in pink” wedding.

Sarah still plans to wear her original wedding dress and to recreate the large celebration they had originally planned as soon as it becomes possible.

Sarah and Tim make a lovely couple and were determined to become Mr & Mrs.

Best wishes to them for a long and happy life together.

Week 25 - Flambards Theme Park, Helston, Cornwall

On a recent trip to Cornwall we spent a really fun day at Flambard’s Theme Park in Helston.

When I was much younger I used to love the funfair and the fast rides but having not been to a fair or theme park for a few years now I was a bit of a chicken at first.

It took a little effort to overcome the nerves to get on the first ride but climbing off after being spun around like I was in a superspeed tumble dryer I couldn’t wait to do the next one and the next!!

It was a lot of fun.

And the great thing about Flambard’s is the variety of entertainment. We particularly liked the “Britain in the Blitz” and “Victorian Village” indoor attractions.

They were both full of amazing artefacts and information which kept us all involved for ages.

And although the grandchildren enjoyed the museums they couldn’t wait to get back outside to the rides again. I was quite pleased too!

It was a great day and I would definitely recommend it if you find yourself in that neck of the woods.

Week 26 - Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew

A year last Christmas my daughter bought me a voucher to visit The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in London and I eagerly anticipated going there with my camera in the Spring of 2020!!

Roll on two voucher extensions (many thanks to Virgin Experiences) and 18 months and we finally made it, camera in hand.

And it did not disappoint. Such a beautiful, peaceful space. And as an added bonus, the weather was gorgeous.

We were so lucky that we were able to enjoy the glasshouses (Palm House, Temperate House, Princess of Wales Conservatory) as they were finally able to open.

There were a few restrictions/closures remaining – i.e. The Giant Pagoda, The Hive – but these are still  impressive viewed from outside.

I took so many images, this week I have managed to put together 3 panels!! And, even then it was difficult to know what to leave out.

If you have the opportunity I would highly recommend a visit to Kew Gardens.
